The intense endothermic peak at 697 °C is related to the melting of Li 3 BO 3, the second endothermic peak at 800 °C is presumably related to the interaction in the mixture studied. It gradually reacts and disappears, forming a colorless solution of lithium hydroxide. The reaction generates heat slowly, and lithium's melting point is too high for it to melt (this is not the case for sodium).
