Is bornite cleavage or fracture
WebBornite is a type of sulfide, minerals in which sulfur has been combined with one or more metals. They tend to have simple structures and often have a metallic luster. In the case of Bornite, the sulfide combines with copper and iron. When tarnished, it may have a colorful iridescence and be called Peacock Ore. WebChalcopyrite contains 34.5% Cu, 30.5% Fe, and 35.0% S. The mineral is the principal source of copper metal, and one of the major source of sulfur. The mineral also contains traces of elements of gold and nickel and recovered in refinery. The crystal system is tetragonal with indistinct cleavage and penetration twins.

WebCleavage, Parting, and Fracture. Cleavage. Crystals often contain planes of atoms along which the bonding between the atoms is weaker than along other planes. In such a case ... Minerals that show this include: bornite (Cu 5 FeS 4) , hematite (Fe 2 O 3), sphalerite (ZnS), and some specimens of labradorite (plagioclase). ... WebCleavage and fracture differ in that cleavage is the break of a crystal face where a new face (resulting in a smooth plane) is formed, whereas fracture is the "chipping" shape of a mineral. All minerals exhibit a fracture, even those that exhibit cleavage. If a mineral with cleavage is chipped a certain way, it will fracture rather than cleave.

WebThroughout human history, chalcopyrite has been our leading source of copper. This is despite having a relatively low copper yield (only 25% of its atoms are copper) compared to other copper minerals such as chalcocite and cuprite (both with 67% yields), or bornite and covellite (that have 50% yields).
